A new era officially got underway at the Xcel Sports Hub yesterday as the new gaffer Steve Conroy and his coaching team took their first pre-season session, while the Academy also opened its doors for an open day.
A blisteringly hot day saw 26 players put through their paces, started off with a thorough warm up by strength and conditioning coach Dave Bass. The players were then split into groups with some intense sessions which were overseen by the gaffer, his assistant Chris Winton and first team coach Liam Walsh, while others worked further with Dave on the S&C side.
Meanwhile, head sports therapist Katie Watts welcomed her new assistant James Rossow to the club and the pair wasted no time as players were individually checked over and given a number of tests to assess their current levels.
After more than two gruelling hours in 32 degrees, the work didn’t stop there as Chris and Liam did a session with the Academy, who were welcoming a large group of potential sign ups for next year.
It was a real eye-opening first session and a fantastic indication of what’s to come from Steve and his team as they bring their own ideas and methods to the club. The excitement levels around the club are growing with each week and everyone involved cannot wait to get started.
With pre-season now officially under way, we’ll be announcing a lot more signings over the course of the summer and we look forward to seeing you all again in just nine days time as we play our first friendly, at home against Fleet Town on Tuesday 9th July, 19:45 kick off.
