A View From The Opposition – Frome Town

For this week’s View From The Oppo, we speak to Frome Town diehard Asa Wilkinson (@dodgeultra)

Tell us about yourself?

My dad started taking me when I was around 6 so a good 30 years now and I’ve carried on the tradition.   I run the unofficial fans forum, I’m part of the supporters club who do a great job raising money for the club, used to be on the committee and very social media all things Frome Town. Have also raised £800 for ex manager Josh Jefferies and the club to pay an FA fine and recently over £400 for captain Sam Teale to have a private CT scan. I love non-league football and whatever league we are in will still follow Frome Town home and away.

What were your aims for the club at the beginning of the season?

New manager, players and effectively a new league with several new teams it was always going to be a consolidation year for everyone but I fully expected us to be around mid table come the end but that unfortunately hasn’t happened.

Do you still believe that you can salvage safety following your home defeat to Beaconsfield?

After we lost to Staines I thought we were gone but two great wins against Taunton and Harrow gave me renewed hope. Unfortunately now after 2 defeats and our goal difference, we are effectively 7 points behind with only 5 games remaining so I think that’s it for us.

What do you believe to be the main reason for your struggles this season?

As mentioned above we appointed a new manager in the summer and had to construct a whole new team. After doing fairly well in this league there was also added supporter hope to live up to. Consistency has been poor all season and we have never put a run of more than two wins together. We have used alot of players this season trying to find the right players and system to suit and it hasn’t quite clicked until recently really which is now too late.

How many points do you think will be the cut off for safety?

Think 49 points should see teams safe but seems to be going right down to the wire who else joins Staines and probably us.

Any particular highlight of the season so far?

Probably 5th game of the season when we went and won 1-3 against Merthyr

Who’s been your player of the season so far, in your opinion?

Connor Roberts has been brilliant in defence as usual and could definitely play a higher standard.

Saturday is seen as a must win game for both sides, how do you see the game going?

Think a draw, well or obviously a win, would be great for you but we need the 3 points so it will be a bit of a cagey affair I think.

What can we expect from the travelling support?

Will always have the hard-core support that go around 15-20 I’d imagine. Personally I won’t be there as have a cricket tour in Newcastle same weekend. Whoops!

Score prediction?

Tip for the title?

I put a bet on Weymouth at the start and that’s certainly looking good.

Favourite crisps?

Kettle chips in any flavour of them.
